Intro: If you're just beginning to read this, I just want to warn you that it's lengthy :)... so grab a cup of coffee before you continue! It's our personal story about our journey with Luke, our son.

In May of 2005 Luke was diagnosed with a seizure disorder that sent us on a roller-coaster ride of medications to stop the seizures. Eventually, by July 2005 we finally had them under control with Clonazepam and Lamotrigine and enjoyed almost 2 years of seizure-free life. Our prayer was that Luke had outgrown the seizures and was well on his way through typical childhood. This was not so, as in May of 2007, just weeks before his baby brother Joel was born, we noticed a few sporadic seizures that escalated into approximately 10 a day within a few months, despite a change and increase in medication. In the meantime Luke had been under the care of an infant development counsellor, a physical therapist and a speech therapist due to the fact that he was delayed in his milestones, weak in his neck/arms/ankles (since birth), and was not talking. By August of 2007, after we read the book Son-Rise by Barry Neil Kaufmann, we realized Luke had some undeniable "red-flags" of autistic behaviour. Aside from the delay in communication, Luke has always shown a fascination for doors, drawers, lids, details of objects and wheels. He was never "lost" to us, nor did he spend time "spinning" or "rocking", however he was fascinated with balancing objects (and succeeded in amazing ways!) and he did not play with toys as he should. We had always enjoyed his quirkiness and were quite proud that this young soul had something amazing about him... he was sweet, sensitive, smiling and fascinating... and still is.

September 27, 2007 Luke was assessed as having autism with a global developmental delay.
